At its core, SEO is not about manipulating search engines or finding magic shortcuts to the top of Google. Instead, it is the practice of designing, structuring, and writing your web pages so that search engine algorithms can easily discover, understand, and value your content. If you want organic, high-quality traffic without paying for ads constantly, understanding SEO is essential. How Search Engines Work: The Life of a Web Page

Before you can write code that ranks well, you must understand the journey a search engine bot (like Googlebot) takes to find your website. A search engine operates in three main phases:

1. Crawling: The search engine sends out automated software programs (known as bots, spiders, or crawlers) to browse the web. They start with a list of known web page URLs and follow the links on those pages to find new URLs.

2. Rendering & Indexing: Once a crawler finds a page, it analyzes the content, structure, and media. For modern Javascript applications, the bot runs a headless browser to render the JavaScript and load the page layout. After processing, the search engine stores the page in a massive database called the Index. If your site isn't indexed, it cannot appear in search results.

3. Ranking: When a user types a query into the search bar, the search engine's algorithm evaluates billions of indexed pages in milliseconds. It ranks the results based on relevance (how well the content matches the user's intent) and authority (how trustworthy the website is, determined by links and user experience).

  • Title Tag: The primary headline that appears in search results. Keep it between 50 to 60 characters and place the primary keyword near the beginning.
  • Meta Description: A short summary (150–160 characters) that encourages searchers to click your link. It is your sales pitch on Google.
  • Open Graph (OG) Tags: Standardized metadata that controls how your page looks when shared on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

Technical SEO: robots.txt and XML Sitemaps

Technical SEO makes it easy for search engine crawlers to read your site and discover new links. If a crawler runs into a broken link or gets stuck in a redirect loop, it will leave your site and ignore updates.

1. robots.txt

This is a simple text file located at the root of your domain (e.g., samadshaikh.dev/robots.txt). It tells search crawlers which paths they are allowed to access and index, and which directories (like admin panels or temporary directories) they must avoid to preserve your site's resources.

Here is a standard production configuration for robots.txt:

Core Web Vitals: Performance as a Ranking Factor

In 2021, Google introduced a set of user-experience metrics called Core Web Vitals. Google uses these metrics to determine whether a web page is slow, unstable, or unresponsive. If your page has poor scores, Google will rank it lower, even if your written content is excellent.

The three primary Core Web Vitals are:

1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Measures loading performance. This is the time it takes for the largest visual block (usually a hero image or main heading) to render on the screen. A good score is 2.5 seconds or less.

2. Interaction to Next Paint (INP): Measures responsiveness. This evaluates how quickly the browser responds when a user clicks a button, types on their keyboard, or interacts with a widget. A good score is 200 milliseconds or less.

3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures visual stability. Have you ever tried to tap a button, only for the page content to shift down at the last second, causing you to tap the wrong link? That shifting represents layout instability. A good CLS score is 0.1 or less.

Enhancing Performance for SEO

To ensure your Web Vitals stay green:

  • Leverage Static Site Generation (SSG): Statically compile pages during build time. This allows pages to load instantly from a Content Delivery Network (CDN) edge cache instead of rendering on the server on every request.
  • Optimize Images: Never serve raw JPEG or PNG images. Always compress files and convert them to modern formats like WebP or AVIF.
  • Explicit Image Dimensions: Always declare width and height parameters on image tags. This reserves physical space on the page, preventing layout shifts when the image finishes loading.
  • Lazy Load Non-Critical Media: Use the loading="lazy" attribute to instruct the browser to download off-screen images only when the user scrolls near them.

Search Security Best Practices

Security plays a major role in search engine visibility. If a website is compromised, search engines will quickly tag it as "harmful to visit," destroying organic traffic overnight.

  • Mandatory HTTPS (SSL/TLS): Using an SSL certificate encrypts the traffic between your user's browser and your web server. Google officially declared HTTPS as a ranking signal in 2014. Browsers mark unencrypted sites (http://) as "Not Secure," which scares away users.
  • Canonical URL Tags: A canonical tag (link rel="canonical") resolves duplicate content penalties. For example, if your site can be accessed via https://samadshaikh.dev/blog/seo and https://samadshaikh.dev/blog/seo?ref=social, Google might see these as duplicate pages. Declaring a canonical URL tells Google which one is the master page.
